Jay is one of the northernmost towns in Orleans County, Vermont, United States. It borders Canada. The population was 426 at the 2000 census. Jay is named for John Jay, one of the "founding fathers" of the United States. The US Census Bureau estimated that the town's population had increased by 13.1% between 2000–2005, the seventh largest increase in the state. Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 34.0 square miles (88.0 km²), of which, 33.9 square miles (87.9 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.12%) is water.

The highest point in town is North Jay Peak at convert|3438|ft above sea level. Despite their containing the name "Jay", other peaks with this name lie mostly in adjacent Westfield, [ [http://www.vermonter.com/nek/jay.asp] ] including Jay Peak itself and Jay Peak Resort.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 426 people, 158 households, and 115 families residing in the town. The population density was 12.6 people per square mile (4.8/km²). There were 417 housing units at an average density of 12.3/sq mi (4.7/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.12% White, 0.47% Native American, 0.47% Asian, and 0.94% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.94% of the population.

There were 158 households out of which 37.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.0% were married couples living together, 6.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 15.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.05.

In the town the population was spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 27.5% from 45 to 64, and 9.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 104.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $32,321, and the median income for a family was $34,625. Males had a median income of $21,563 versus $19,286 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,546. About 9.2% of families and 12.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.9% of those under age 18 and 14.0% of those age 65 or over.
