Whitwell is a city in Marion County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,660 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chattanooga, TN–GA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

Whitwell is located at coor dms|35|11|51|N|85|31|9|W|city (35.197570, -85.519082)GR|1, in the Sequatchie Valley.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.3 square miles (8.6 km²), of which, 3.3 square miles (8.6 km²) of it is land and 0.30% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,660 people, 727 households, and 482 families residing in the city. The population density was 500.1 people per square mile (193.1/km²). There were 786 housing units at an average density of 236.8/sq mi (91.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.35% White, 2.17% African American, 0.30% from other races, and 0.18% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.60% of the population.

There were 727 households out of which 24.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.5% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% were non-families. 30.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.85.

In the city the population was spread out with 20.0% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 84.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $25,458, and the median income for a family was $31,151. Males had a median income of $26,550 versus $21,532 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,249. About 13.2% of families and 16.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.4% of those under age 18 and 20.3% of those age 65 or over.

Paper Clips Project

Whitwell has achieved fame due to the Paper Clips Project that was carried out by children of the local school starting in 1998, and the subsequent movie that was made about the children's achievement.
