Lokomotiv Novosibirsk , in the Russian second division, during the 2001-02 season. He moved to Italy in December 2001, signed by Metis Varese, for which he played from 2002 to 2004. He was selected by theUtah Jazz in the2004 NBA Draft and promptly traded to theDallas Mavericks for their first-round pick in the2005 NBA Draft (Utah later traded that pick to thePortland Trail Blazers , which used the pick to draftLinas Kleiza ). He was originally available for selection in the previous year's draft, but abruptly pulled out just days before because he declared he was not yet ready to propel himself into the NBA. Podkolzin was considered to be a high draft pick in he 2004 draft because of his size, blocking ability and strength, but he was chosen late in the draft. OnAugust 5 ,2006 , he was waived by the Mavericks after appearing briefly in just six games spanning two seasons.
