Evinrude Outboard Motors

Evinrude Outboard Motors

Evinrude Outboard Motors is a major brand of outboard boat motors. Founded by Ole Evinrude, it was formerly owned by the Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC), and is now owned by Bombardier Recreational Products.

Evinrude outboards use primarily two stroke engines in their larger models (40 horsepower and above), and four stroke engines in most of their smaller models.

Evinrude outboards used carburetors until the late 1990s, when FICHT, a fuel injection technology, was introduced.

After Bombardier acquired the Evinrude and Johnson Outboards brands, FICHT technology was replaced by E-TEC direct fuel injection. This improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, oil usage, noise levels, and maintenance needs. Evinrude E-TEC was the first outboard engine technology to win the American Environmental Protection Agency 2005 Clean Air Excellence Award which recognizes low emission levels. It is also recognized as acceptable for use by the European Union.

Evinrude the dragonfly, a character from Disney's The Rescuers, was likely inspired by this company--the dragonfly mans a leaf as a sort of airboat in several scenes.
