Asian-Scots

Asian-Scots

Asian-Scots or Scottish Asians are Scottish citizens citizens of South Asian ancestry or South Asian immigrants to Scotland. Bangladeshi, Indians, Pakistani & Sri Lankan are the main social groups who are affiliated with the term.

The term Scottish Asian is used to denote citizens of South Asian ancestry or South Asian immigrants to Scotland. Scotland's South Asian population is partly a legacy of its long hegemony and colonial rule over India (See British Raj).

Note: In British usage, the term does not include East Asians, who are known by their respective national origins (e.g. Chinese, Japanese) or under the umbrella term "Oriental", or west Asians, such as Turks.

The term New Scots is sometimes used to describe people of this and various other heritages.

Communities

Scotland's South Asian population of 70,000 is mostly of Pakistani origin and are concentrated around the urban areas such as Greater Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee however, there are Asian communities in places as small as Stornoway and Aberdeen [http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/newspapers/sunday_times/scotland/article663308.ece] .

*Dundee 4,000 Asians (especially the Hilltown and Stobswell)
*Edinburgh 10,000 Asians
*Glasgow (and surrounding Greater Glasgow area) 50,000 Asians (especially Pollokshields, Pollokshaws, Govanhill and Woodlands)

Asian-Scots can be found all over Scotland - the main areas being Glasgow, Edinburgh and most of Central Scotland. It is rarer to find Asian-Scots in the Highlands.
