Grover Underwood is one of the main fictional characters in Rick Riordan's "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" stories.

He is a satyr, a mythological Greek being that is half goat-half human. He has the upper body of a human, and the legs and horns of a goat. His horns are usually hidden by his curly brown hair (although they do grow too tall for him to hide them)or sometimes a green rasta cap. Although he is 32, he's at the mental age of about 16 because satyrs mature half as fast as humans do.

Character History

Grover is the best friend of Percy Jackson, with whom he has an empathy link, meaning if one of the two dies, then the other will probably die too (or permanently be left in a vegetative state). However, having one means one can send messages to the other through dreams. He met him when he went undercover as a disabled child (one with a leg disorder; he seems to have this due to the fake feet he wears when needing to appear human) to find out if Percy was a half-blood. Percy does not find out that Grover is a satyr until his trip with his mother when he goes to Montauk, New York and gets attacked by a Minotaur.

Grover is shown to be a bit cowardly, getting afraid easily. When this happens his eyes turn to slits like a goat's. But he always tries to defend his friends and is very loyal. He also can cope with dangerous situations fairly well (like when he was kidnapped by a Cyclops).

Grover has many powers. This includes being able to make magical music with his pipes which can make things grow, find paths and do numerous other things. He can also smell monsters and talk to animals. As a result of his meeting with Pan, he can also use the power of Panic.

Being a satyr Grover loves nature and Hunters very much and hates pollution. In the third book, it is revealed he has a huge crush on Artemis, the goddess of the hunt. ("She's so...into nature.") He once had a crush on a blueberry bush., and often helps out animals. At the end of the first book Grover sets off to find Pan, God of nature who disappeared centuries ago. All satyrs believe he is still alive, and wish to bring him back to restore nature to the way it was.

In The Titan's Curse, Grover was involved in several situations where Pan, god of the Wild, has spoken to him. The first was in New Mexico, where the presence of Pan made the birds on Grover's coffee cup and a rubber rat come to life, also bringing a wild boar to help Percy, Thalia, Grover, Bianca and Zoe escape the skeletal army. The second incident happened when Grover was alone. Pan spoke to him, saying: "I await you." Both times, Grover was drinking coffee, so he and the other satyrs believe this had something to do with Pan's appearance (o Percy's disbelief).

In The Battle of the Labyrinth, Grover is revealed to have a girlfriend, a dryad named Juniper. He has angered the elder council of satyrs by proclaiming that he has heard Pan. They warn him that if he does not find the god in a week, his searcher's license will be revoked. He accompanies Percy, Tyson, and Annabeth into the Labyrinth. He finally discovers Pan and passes on his message that he has died. He also faces his fear of Cyclopes, or more so Tyson. In the climactic Battle of the Labyrinth, Grover unleashes a horrible scream of "pure fear"- known as Panic- that Pan was said to have possessed, and drives the attacking monsters away from Camp Half-Blood.

In the books

"The Lightning Thief"

Grover goes undercover in Yancy Academy as a disabled student in order to discover any half-blood who attends it. There he discovered Percy. He also reveals his satyr form to Percy when the Jacksons (Percy and his mom) go to a beach house in Montauk. He accompanies Percy along with Annabeth Chase to the Underworld, their first quest.

"The Sea of Monsters"

Due to the empathy link he established, Grover is able to communicate with Percy. In his dreams, Percy sees how Grover is trapped by a cyclops, about to meet the same sticky ending as all satyrs before him who went searching for Pan. Along with Annabeth and Tyson, his half-brother and Cyclops, Percy journeys on his next quest to find Grover.

"The Titan's Curse"

Grover discovers Nico and Bianca di Angelo in a military academy. Unfortuantely, the vice principal there turns out to be a Manticore and kidnaps Annabeth. Grover also meets Artemis and her Huntresses, and has a crush on her. He, along with Percy, Zoe Nightshade, Bianca di Angelo and Thalia journey to save the kidnapped Artemis. On this quest, however, Zoe and Bianca die, the latter being a cause of great anguish and melancholy to Nico di Angelo. Grover also hears Pan in a deserted New Mexican town.

"The Battle of the Labyrinth"

It is in this book that we meet Juniper, Grover's nymph girlfriend, who is sobbing hysterically as The Council of Cloven Elders' decide that Grover has been searching far too long for the god Pan - they give him a week to find Pan, and if he doesn't, his searcher's liscence will be taken away. Grover, Percy, Annabeth and Tyson head into the Labyrinth this time to find it's creator, Daedalus and his workshop. Sometime in the book, Grover and Tyson split up from Percy and Annabeth, however Grover meets a monster. Later, Grover finds Pan and learns the truth about his disappearance, that he, the God of Wild Things, must fade away and leave the job of making the earth green again to Grover, Annabeth, Percy and Tyson. In the Battle of the Labyrinth, Grover unleashes the cry of Panic, greatly disrupting - but not ending - the Battle.
