Hartlepool Rovers are an English rugby union club who play at The Friarage, West View Road in Hartlepool.

History

Hartlepool Rovers were formed in 1879 when they played at the Old Friarage on the Headland Estate in Hartlepool, before moving to West View Road.

In the 1950s people from West View, County Durham and the the Headland estate, viewed Rovers as the most prestigious club in the town, district, county and even the world when they supplied several county player, with two divisional and one international player who played for the Isle Of Man.

The clubs most famous player was RF (Bob) Oakes, who died in 1952. He also played for Headingley and was president of the Yorkshire Rugby Football Union and president of the Rugby Football Union. Oakes is remembered every year by the RF Oakes memorial match, followed by a dinner for the players taking part. Players such as Will Carling have played in the game. The club itself played many high profile matches including the inaugural Barbarans match and the New Zealand All Blacks.

In the 1911-12 season, Hartlepool Rovers broke the world record for the number of points scored in a season racking up 860 points including 122 tries, 87 conversions, five penalties and eleven drop goals against Horden U12's.

Rovers were relegated to the Durham/Northumberland 1 league after losing their final 2007-08 league game to local rival West Hartlepool R.F.C.

Hartlepool Rovers have a coaching set-up with Johnny Wrigley (Spear-mint Gum) as head coach, John Dixon as forwards coach, Craig Lee as backs coach and James Campbell as the official Website facilitator / PR guru / deluded supporter.
