Carlo Petrini (born
June 22 ,1949 ), born in theprovince of Cuneo in the commune Bra inItaly , is the founder of the InternationalSlow Food Movement. He first came to prominence in the 1980s for taking part in a campaign against thefast food chainMcDonald's opening near theSpanish Steps inRome .He is an editor of multiple publications at the publishing house "Slow Food Editore" and writes several weekly columns for "
La Stampa ". He was one ofTime Magazine 's heroes of 2004. In 2004, he founded theUniversity of Gastronomic Sciences , a school intended to bridge the gap between agriculture and gastronomy.In order to strengthen his campaign against intensive food production, he refers to the Pope's call for the protection of local agriculture, despite the renowned papal support for unsustainable population growth.
