Yid Army

"This article is about the Yid Army hooligan firm. For the general supporters known as the Yid Army, see Tottenham Hotspur Yid Army."

The Yid Army is the name of a hooligan firm associated with English football club Tottenham Hotspur .cite news |title=BBC News Hooligans |publisher=BBC News |date=2001-08-04 |url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/static/in_depth/programmes/2002/hooligans/diary/millwall.stm|accessdate=2007-06-17] The term Yid Army is also a general term sometimes used to describe fans of the club.

The Yid Army have a rivalry with other London clubs including Millwall F.C. with whom they have had arranged fights. On 4 August 2001 police had to split rival Yid Army and Millwall Bushwackers on Jamaica Road Bermondsey after what was described as a vicious fight.

In October 2003 fights broke out before and after a match with London rivals West Ham United. Fighting broke out at The Cockerel pub, Tottenham High Road which received extensive damage, with fighting breaking out throughout the day.cite news |title=Arrests over football violence |publisher=BBC News |date=2003-10-30 |url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/3227015.stm|accessdate=2007-06-17]

Yid Army is also a general name given to Tottenham fans. For various reasons (fan base, directors, Alf Garnet, racism) some fans of other clubs started taunting Tottenham fans by calling them "Yids" which they thought was an insult. While most Tottenham supporters are not Jewish many choose to identify themselves as Yids and the term "Yid Army" derives from the Tottenham fans choosing to embrace their new nickname rather than view it as an insult.
