Siouxland

Siouxland

Siouxland is a general term for the area around Sioux City, Iowa and parts of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, an area that includes much of northwestern Iowa, the northeast corner of Nebraska, the southeast corner of South Dakota, and the extreme southwest corner of Minnesota. The term "Siouxland" was reportedly coined by author Frederick Manfred in 1947. Manfred was born in Doon, Iowa, a small town in Lyon County.

Boundaries

The boundaries of Siouxland have no official designation, but as the term is frequently used by Sioux City media, one can assume that Siouxland is roughly synonymous with the Sioux City sphere of media influence. Nearly all of the communities in Siouxland are within a 50- to 70-mile circle centered on Sioux City.

Major cities

The major city in Siouxland is Sioux City, Iowa, along with South Sioux City, Nebraska. Another major city in Siouxland is the city of Norfolk, Nebraska (pronounced Nor-fork). Its population is around 24,000, and it is the major commercial area of northeast Nebraska. It also has a radio station that works with one of the Sioux City television stations.

ize

The Siouxland area is larger than that of the Sioux City Metropolitan Statistical Area, which comprises seven counties: Woodbury County, Iowa, Dakota County, Nebraska, Dixon County, Nebraska, Cedar County, Nebraska, Union County, South Dakota, Rock County, Minnesota, and Pipestone County, Minnesota. These seven counties have a total population of nearly 250,000. (2000).

The area around Sioux Falls, South Dakota (The metro area of which the counties of Minnehaha County, Lincoln County, McCook County and Turner County belong to) is often referred to as the "Sioux Empire."

However, this region (which includes adjacent areas in the southwest corner of Minnesota) is also considered "Siouxland" in the very broadest sense of the term.
