Paddy Power (politician)

Patrick (Paddy) Power ( _ga. Pádraig de Paor; born 19 November 1928) is a former Irish Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála (TD) and Minister of the Haughey era. He served as Minister for Fisheries & Forestry from 1979 to June 1981 and Minister for Defence in the Government of March to December 1982. He was briefly Minister for Trade, Commerce & Tourism in October 1982 following the resignation of Des O'Malley to challenge for the leadership of the party. He was also a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 1977 to 1979. Paddy Power retired from politics in 1989. His son, Seán Power, retained his Dáil seat. He is currently a Minister of State. A second son, J. J. Power, serves as a Green Party councillor on Kildare County Council.
