Early life

Stayt was born in 1962 in Gloucester in Gloucestershire, in the West of England. He says he was a "late starter as a journalist", but that his years spent working as a roofer, a roadie and a barman were not entirely wasted.

Education

Stayt was educated at Wycliffe College,[2] a co-educational part-boarding independent school in the town of Stonehouse (near the market town of Stroud) in Gloucestershire, in the West of England, followed by Birmingham Polytechnic in the city of Birmingham, in the West Midlands region of Central England.

Life and career

Stayt started his career in commercial radio in his home town of Gloucester.

Broadcasting career

Before moving into television, Stayt worked in radio, hosting Capital Radio's award winning news programme The Way It Is, and also reported for LBC and BBC Radio 5 Live. From January 2008 he has been the weekend presenter for BBC Breakfast, the early morning news programme broadcast on BBC One and BBC News. He also continues to occasionally present relief shifts on BBC News.

Stayt began his career working for ITN in 1995, as a reporter for Five News, and presented the network's prime-time bulletins and half hour live debate programmes. During his career he has anchored Five News' coverage of the events of 11 September 2001, and spent a total of ten years at ITN, both as a correspondent and a presenter.

Stayt was also a presenter for Sky News. He has presented numerous current affairs programmes, and also hosted live 'reality' TV shows Jailbreak, and Are You Telepathic.

Stayt joined BBC Breakfast in 2006 initially as a relief presenter, however in December 2007, he was promoted as Friday-Sunday presenter.

Personal life

Stayt married Anne Breckell in December 1995 in Gloucester. They live in St Margarets, west London, and have a son (born August 2000) and daughter (born May 1997).
