Extremely large telescope
- Extremely large telescope
An extremely large telescope (ELT) is a telescope of more than 20 m diameter. [See title of http://www.astro-opticon.org/fp5/skelcase.html and section 1 of http://www.aao.gov.au/instrum/ELT/ELTroadmap040917.pdf] There are currently ten such telescopes in various stages of design or construction:

* [http://optik2.mtk.nao.ac.jp/futureplan/eltproje.htm JELT] : Japanese ELT Project
* [http://www.tmt.org/ TMT] : Thirty Meter Telescope
* [http://www.aura-nio.noao.edu/ GSMT] : Giant Segmented Mirror Telescope
* [http://www.eso.org/projects/owl/ OWL] : Overwhelmingly Large Telescope
* [http://www.gmto.org/ GMT] : Giant Magellan Telescope
* [http://www.hia-iha.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/projects/VLOT_e.html VLOT] : Very Large Optical Telescope
* [http://astrosun.tn.cornell.edu/atacama LAT] : Large Atacama Telescope
* [http://www.astro.lu.se/~torben/euro50/ EURO50] : European 50-metre Telescope
* [http://serweb.oamp.fr/denis/elt/ngcfht_may01.html LPT] : Large Petal Telescope
These telescopes have a number of features in common, in particular the use of a segmented primary mirror (similar to the existing Keck telescopes), and the use of high-order adaptive optics systems.
