Shelekhov

Shelekhov

Shelekhov ( _ru. Шелехов) is a town in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia, located some 20 km southwest of Irkutsk. Population: 48,300 (2006 est.); 47,520 (2002 Census); 47,702 (1989 Census).

Shelekhov was founded in the early 1950s due to the construction of an aluminum plant. In 1956, it was named Shelekhov after a Russian explorer Grigory Shelikhov. For some reason, the authorities used the incorrect (though quite popular) spelling of his last name. In 1962, Shelekhov was granted town status.
