Hirado Castle

Hirado Castle

Hirado Castle (平戸城 Hirado-jo) is the castle of the former Hirado Han. It is located in the city of Hirado in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. The first castle was built in 1599 by the 26th Lord of the Matsura clan who ruled the over the Hirado fiefdom. It was destroyed in 1613 and construction to rebuild the castle started again in 1704 by order of the 29th lord of Matsura. Completed in 1718 it was the centre for the Matsura clan rule over the Hirado domain, which at its biggest stretched past current Sasebo City and Matsuura City and included Ojika island of the Goto island group. Some original elements remain such as two defence turrets, other parts including the main donjon have been reconstructed.
