Elberton, Washington

Elberton, Washington

Elberton is a ghost town in Whitman County, Washington, United States.

History

Elberton was incorporated as a 4th class town on 24 April 1896. It subsequently ceased as a town on 6 December 1966 through the process of disincorporation. It was officially listed as disincorporated with the Secretary of State of Washington on 14 January 1966. Under Washington State law, all responsibility of the town was passed to the State of Washington. Subsequently, Elberton became part of unincorporated Whitman County, Washington again within four years, with the county acquiring the property of the town.

This is the last time a Washington city disincorporated. Elberton once had a population of 500 and at one time had a sawmill, a flour mill, a railroad that passed through and the world's largest prune dryer.

Today, about 15 people live in the convert|200|acre|km2|sing=on area that once was Elberton, and most of the land is a county-owned park and being listed in the Register of Historical Places in Washington.
