Historical significance

  • Colorado wins their first Miss Teen USA title, and places for the fourth time. This was Colorado's first placement since Miss Teen USA 1998.
  • New Jersey recorded their highest placement in the competition to date, surpassing Jacklyn Pezzotta's fourth runner-up placement at Miss Teen USA 2003. New Jersey has placed in four of the five years from 2003–2007.
  • North Carolina made the top three for the second consecutive year.[3] In 2006 Melissa Lingafelt placed first runner-up.
  • South Carolina recorded their highest placement since Vanessa Minnillo won in 1998.
  • West Virginia placed for only the fourth time, making the top five for the second time in three years.
  • Alabama made the cut for only the fifth time (first in 1988 and last in 2004), and New Mexico made the cut for only the fifth time since Brittany Toll made it in 2005.
  • Rhode Island made the cut in two consecutive years for the first time since Gina Tognoni and Shanna Moakler placed in 1991–1992. Rhode Island has placed at both Miss USA and Miss Teen USA twice in succession for the first time ever.
  • Virginia and Kansas made the top ten for the third year in succession.
  • Wyoming also placed for the first time since 1998, recording only their third placement in the history of the competition.
  • Texas did not make the semi-finals for the third consecutive year, the first time this happened since 1995.
  • Maryland won their second Miss Photogenic award and Mississippi their second Miss Congeniality award.

Selection of contestants

One delegate from each state and the District of Columbia was chosen in state pageants held from September to December 2006. Following the selection of Ava Goldson as Miss District of Columbia Teen USA, Goldson chose to resign due to educational commitments and her first runner-up Jasmine Alexis represented the District of Columbia at Miss Teen USA 2007.[4]

Events

Contestants arrived in Pasadena on August 12 and participated in a number of events in the lead up to the final competition. On August 14 the official swimsuit poster shoot was held by the pool of the Pasadena Hilton, the host hotel.[5]

Competition Rounds

Preliminaries

  • The 51 delegates competed in a preliminary competition on August 19, five days before the final. There were three rounds of competition: swimsuits, evening gowns, and personal interviews. The personal interviews took place prior to or following the swimsuit and evening gown preliminary competition production.
  • Swimsuit Competition: The delegates wore BSC Swimwear Thailand swimsuits.
  • Evening Gown Competition: The delegates wore an evening gown chosen by themselves.
  • Interview Competition: Each of the delegates answered a question posed by a judge.

  • The average scores of each delegate were calculated and the highest placed delegates, along with a selection of delegates by the Miss Universe organization, made the top fifteen. Those delegates then were announced during the final competition.

Finals

The top fifteen was announced during the final telecast and went on to compete in the swimsuit competition, which featured music by Kat DeLuna. Following this the top ten delegates were announced and they competed in evening gowns, to music by the Jonas Brothers. After this, the two special award winners were announced, followed by the announcement of the top five delegates. The interview competition involved the top five answering a question proposed by one of the judges. Each delegate had 30 seconds to answer. Afterwards the judges had one final look at the top five as they cast their votes for the winner and runners-up. Katie Blair then took her final walk and the runners-up and winner was announced.

During the Final Question round, Aimee Teegarden asked Miss South Carolina, Lauren Caitlin Upton, why she thought a fifth of Americans are unable to locate the United States on a world map. Upton's response was:

"I personally believe that, U.S. Americans are unable to do so, because some… people out there in our nation that don’t have maps, and I believe that our education, like such as in South Africa and the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should… our education over here in the U.S., should help the U.S., er, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future.., for our children... " [6]

Her response has been criticized as "strange" and "grammarless," and was also described as an "extreme blonde moment." [7][8] Videos of her response were posted to YouTube and have received several million views,[9] and has now become an Internet phenomenon.

Chelsea Welch (West Virginia), Macy Erwin (Tennessee), Jena Sims (Georgia) and Paige Hill (Oklahoma)

The following Tuesday, August 28, Upton appeared on NBC's Today Show, where Ann Curry gave her the opportunity to formulate a new response to the same question. Upton's new reply was: "Personally, my friends and I, we know exactly where the United States is on our map. I don’t know anyone else who doesn’t. If the statistics are correct, I believe there should be more emphasis on geography in our education so people will learn how to read maps better." She said that she was "in shock" during the competition and barely heard the question that had been asked.[10]
