Mahavitaran (महावितरण)or MSEDCL(Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd-Mahadiscom) controlled by Government of Maharashtra, is a public sector company which distributes electricity to all regions of the state; except Mumbai city and the most part of its suburban region, where BEST (Bombay Electric Suppler and Transport) and Reliance Energy, TATA Power, are the only distributors.

On June 4, 2005, in accordance with Electricity Act, 2003 of Government of India, the old state owned company MSEB Maharashtra State Electricity Board was split into three companies: Mahanirmiti (महानिर्मिती) or Mahagenco (Maharashtra State Electricity Generation Company); Mahavahan (महावहन) or Mahatransco (Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company); and Mahavitaran .Mahavitaran is responsible for distribution of electricity throughout the state by buying power from either Mahanirmiti , Captive Power Plants or from other State Electricity Boards and Private sector power generation companies. An holding entity 'MSEB Holding Company' was created, holds all the stake in these three companies.

Achievements

*Commission a 10 MW set at Khaparkheda in 1950.
*Commission 1.2 MW Hydro unit at Radhanagari in 1951.
*Commission a 30 MW set at Paras in 1960.
*Commission a 62.5 MW set at Paras in 1967.
*Commission a 140 MW set at Nasik in 1970.
*Commission a 120 MW set at Koradi in 1974.
*Commission a 200 MW set at Koradi in 1978.
*Commission 60 MW Gas Turbine Unit at Uran in 1982.
*Commission a 500 MW set at Chandrapur in 1991.
*Introduce Bag Filter Technology in Thermal Plants to bring down Pollution.
*Set up a pilot project to extract akumina from Fly-Ash at Koradi ThermalPower Station with assistance of C.P.R.I., Bangalore.
*Commission 210 MW unit at Parli Thermal Power Station in record time of 39 months instead of 48 months
*Introduction of operating cost center concept - a step towards share market power sale.
*Commission Khaperkheda Thermal Power Station Extension Stage II (2 x 210 MW) Unit 3&4 in 2001
