Singapore Volunteer Corps

Singapore Volunteer Corps

The Singapore Volunteer Corps (or Singapore Special Constabulary) was a militia unit which was established in 1854 but was disbanded in 1887. In 1888, the unit was revived, and was the first unit to field the Maxim Gun. By 1922, it was disbanded again, only to be revived a second time in 1949, after WW2.

In 1954 the Singapore Volunteer Corps were absorbed into the Singapore Military Forces. David Saul Marshall, a well known figure in the early politics of independent Singapore, is noted to have served in the Singapore Volunteer Corps.

In 1965, with the independence of Singapore, the SVC was renamed the People's Defence Force, which later became an operationally-ready unit of the Singapore Army.
