Kallada Boat Race

Kallada Boat Race (The Kallada Jalotsav) is one of the most famous boat races held in South Kerala, India. The boat race is an annual event which happens 28 days after Onam (28 aam Onam). Almost all the famous snake boats (Chundanvallam) take part in this event. This boat race is held on the Muthiraparambu-Karuvathrakadavu course of the Kallada River.This year it will be conducted on the 9th of october. An organising committee under the patronship of education minister sri M.A Baby ,peoples representatives of kollam has been organised for making the event a grand success.The organising comittee has decided to increase the prize money almost double than the last year.The winners will be awarded Rupees One lakh , Rupees Fifty thousand, rupees Twentyfive thousnd and rupees fifteen thousand respectively as first to fourth places.and rupees fifty thousand will be given to each team as bonus. It has also decided to form a special committee including the experts , to judge the perfomance of each team during the event ,so as to increase the quality of the boat race.The boat race is conducted along the straight portion (nettayam) of Kallada River. The race can be conveniently viewed from the beautiful village Munroeisland (Munroethuruthu in vernacular). Munroeisland holds an important place in the touristmap of Kerala. the country boat sight seeing across Munroeisland conducted by the Kollam district tourist promotion council is best of its kind in the country.Munroeisland can be reached from Kollam railway station by road(28km).12Km from kundara $ 24km from karunagapally at north. Kollam is 71 km away by road from the Trivandrun air port.
