West Melton in New Zealand is a satellite town of Christchurch and has the largest population in the Selwyn District of Canterbury, New Zealand. It has long been associated with horse racing (trotting), arable land, and sheep farming. Recently, it has become associated with wine growing and deer farming. There is a rugby club, a local BP Petrol Station, two churches (Anglican and Presbyterian), a pub and a local school, "West Melton Primary School".

In 2006 it became well known about the proposed new subdivision, Gainsborough, that is still to occur in West Melton and is set to increase the local population. The subdivision is said to include 200 new properties and be situated either side of the Main West Coast Road, which runs through the township. It is one of many subdivisions set to occur throughout the area.

World famous Soldat player Samuel Bowen aka 'Cult' currently resides in West Melton.

The usually-resident population has increased from 4,133 in 1996 to 5,613 for the 2006 census.
