Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council is the local governing body for Neath Port Talbot. It is currently controlled by the Labour party, under the leadership of Councillor Alun Thomas, who succeeded Derek Vaughan when he became an MEP in May 2009.

Neath Port Talbot is a Labour stronghold. Labour have been in power in Neath Port Talbot since 1996.[3]

Mayoralty

The mayor for Neath Port Talbot for 2009-2010 is Councillor Pam Thomas and the deputy mayor is Councillor Lella James.

Electoral wards

The county borough is divided into 42 electoral wards returning a total of 64 councillors. Some of these wards are coterminous with communities (parishes) of the same name.   • New Neath Civic Centre,
  • Port Talbot Civic Centre, and
  • The Quays in Baglan Bay.

The site of former Neath Civic Centre was is now undergoing re-development as a shopping mall.
