Deakin Regional and Rural Medical School

Deakin University Regional and Rural Medical School is a medical school of Deakin University based in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. On 8th of April, 2006, the Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon John Howard MP announced that Deakin University will host Victoria's third medical school.

There will be 120 Commonwealth Supported Places available at the university's Geelong campus. The start-up costs will be $18 million. These positions will be filled by graduates of the Bachelor of Science (Biomedical) and other health degrees, such as nursing. Applicants for these positions must first sit the GAMSAT (Graduate Australian Medical School Admission Test), an ACER test, in March one year before the time they intend to start the BMBS degree. In previous years, applicants can expect to receive notification of the score obtained in the GAMSAT test in mid to late May.

The university expects to accept applications for 2008 entry to this degree.

The aim of the medical school is to address the chronic shortage of medical practitioners in regional areas in Victoria. This will be achieved by targeting training to the body of candidates who already reside in these remote regions, so they go on to practise in their local community.
