Roman Catholic Diocese of Shreveport

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Shreveport ( _la. Dioecesis Sreveportuensis in Louisiana) is a Roman Catholic diocese located in norhwestern Louisiana and a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. The Diocese of Shreveport was canonically erected on June 16, 1986 when Pope John Paul II split the former diocese of Alexandria-Shreveport into the Diocese of Alexandria and the Diocese of Shreveport. It is under the government of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and belongs to the Conference Region: V (AL, KY, LA, MS, TN] . Its mother church is the Cathedral of St. John Berchmans, in Shreveport.

The territory of the diocese covers an area of 28,825 km² and its total population is about 800,000. There are 40,000 Catholics in the Diocese (5% of the total population), and 42 diocesan priests, with 32 parishes in total. Though at present, Shreveport is "sede vacante", a new Bishop was appointed on April 1, 2008. Reverend Monsignor Michael Duca will be ordained on May 19 as the second Bishop of Shreveport. The Bishop Emeritus is William Benedict Friend since December 20, 2006.
