Bernt Julius Muus

Bernt Julius Muus

Bernt Julius Muus (1832-1900) led a group of Norwegian-American immigrant pastors and farmers, to found St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, USA, in 1874. St. Olaf College is a residential, four-year private liberal arts college and is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

He also founded St. John's Lutheran church located in Northfield, Minnesota, and several other churches.

Muus was born in Snåsa, Trøndelag, Norway and completed his theological training in 1854 before emigrating in 1859. Although his achievements were great, he was brusque and uncompromising; as a result he was expelled from the church for failure to conform to doctrine.

He is buried in Trondheim, Norway at the Nidaros Cathedral cemetery.
