June 13 ,1968 in Windsor,Ontario ,Canada ) is currently the head coach of theFlorida Panthers of theNational Hockey League and part-owner of theOshawa Generals of the OHL. He was previously the head coach of theDetroit Whalers ,Plymouth Whalers , andKitchener Rangers of the OHL. He is a two-time winner of the OHL Coach of the Year trophy and led the Rangers to aMemorial Cup victory in 2003.Playing career
DeBoer was drafted 227th overall by the
Toronto Maple Leafs in the1988 NHL Entry Draft . At the time he was playing with theWindsor Spitfires in the OHL, and in his best offensive season with them he scored 45 goals and 46 assists for 91 points. After Windsor, DeBoer went on to play for theMilwaukee Admirals of the International Hockey League, and played two full seasons with them. In his last season with the Admirals, he scored 27 goals and 34 assists for 61 points and retired after that season.Career statistics
Coaching career
DeBoer became an assistant coach for the
Detroit Junior Red Wings in 1994. After one season he was promoted to the dual position of Head Coach-GM. He showed his coaching prowess winning theMatt Leyden Trophy as OHL Coach of the Year for two consecutive years in 1999 and 2000. ThePlymouth Whalers , as they are now called, established them as a consistent OHL force under DeBoer. After the 2000–01 season, DeBoer and his assistant,Steve Spott , left Plymouth and joined theKitchener Rangers in a position similar to the one they had in Plymouth. It took DeBoer two seasons to lead the Rangers to aMemorial Cup victory, something he was never able to achieve in Plymouth. DeBoer was an assistant coach for gold medal-winning Team Canada in the2005 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships . He had been rumoured to be heading for the vacant head coaching position for theToronto Marlies in 2005, but the job was filled byPaul Maurice . DeBoer continues to be among the OHL's elite for head coaches. He was named head coach of theFlorida Panthers on June 13, 2008.Awards
