Waitangi, Chatham Islands

Waitangi is the main port and settlement on the Chatham Islands. It is located on the southern shore of Petre Bay, on the west coast of the main island. This small outpost of civilisation is by far the largest settlement in the archipelago, with a population of about 300, approximately 40% of the group's population of 750.

* Health services - Four bed hospital facility, is staffed by a Doctor and Nursing Sisters
* Police - one Constable
* Justice - 6 monthly visiting District Court Judge
* Schools - Te One School, 4 teacher school
* Banking - ANZ Bank, only one on Island
* Shop - one main shop, sells petrol. Also a cafe nearby.
* Radio - FM station "Radio Weka" - volunteers.
* Television - as of May 1991 New Zealand broadcasts are recorded on video and arrive for rebroadcast - volunteers.
* Telephone by satellite to New Zealand.
* Hotel - Hotel Chathams, on seafront. Doubles as Pub.
