The Zaragoza Mexican Navy 1896

The Corvette Zaragoza, also called the General Zaragoza, the School Ship Zaragoza or the Flagship of the Mexican Navy, was built in 1891 in Le Havre, France. Officers and crew numbered 139 persons. Zaragoza was 213 feet in length, had a displacement of 1,226 tons, top speed of 13 knots and was built of steel. Its armament consisted of four 7 inch Canat guns, two Nordenfeidt rapid fire guns and two Hotchkiss revolving guns.

During the Yucatan campaign in 1898-1905 and later in 1915 it participated by transporting troops, provisions, ammunition, etc, to the ports of Progreso, Xcalax, Isla Mujeres, Morelos Port, Cozumel and Bay of the Ascension, Hondo River.

Zaragoza participated in combat during The Tampico Affair from April 8 to May 13, 1914, when revolutionary troops seized the port. In October, 1919, it escorted the remains of poet Amado Nervo.

On March 6, 1926, Zaragoza was dismantled and sunk in the Veracruzan shallows.
