Blythewood is a town in Fairfield and Richland counties in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The population was 170 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Columbia, South Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

Blythewood is located at coor dms|34|13|5|N|80|59|5|W|city (34.217992, -80.984618)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.2 square miles (8.3 km²), of which, 3.2 square miles (8.2 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (1.86%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 170 people, 73 households, and 45 families residing in the town. The population density was 53.9 people per square mile (20.8/km²). There were 111 housing units at an average density of 35.2/sq mi (13.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 81.18% White, 18.24% African American, and 0.59% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.35% of the population.

There were 73 households out of which 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.3% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.0% were non-families. 28.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.91.

In the town the population was spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 31.8% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 82.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $35,750, and the median income for a family was $36,250. Males had a median income of $26,635 versus $30,500 for females. The per capita income for the town was $19,163. About 11.4% of families and 14.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 30.0% of those under the age of eighteen and 14.3% of those sixty five or over.
