Monroe City is a city in Marion, Monroe, and Ralls counties in the US state of Missouri. The population was 2,588 at the 2000 census.

The Marion and Ralls County portions of Monroe City are part of the Hannibal Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

Monroe City is located at 39°39′13″N 91°43′56″W / 39.65361°N 91.73222°W / 39.65361; -91.73222 (39.653570, -91.732152).[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.1 square miles (8.1 km²), of which, 3.1 square miles (8.0 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (1.28%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,588 people, 1,061 households, and 661 families residing in the city. The population density was 837.1 people per square mile (323.4/km²). There were 1,182 housing units at an average density of 382.3 per square mile (147.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 89.34% White, 8.85% African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.43% of the population.

There were 1,061 households out of which 31.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.1% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% were non-families. 34.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 3.04.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 84.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $30,377, and the median income for a family was $38,750. Males had a median income of $28,947 versus $20,114 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,937. About 7.3% of families and 11.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.4% of those under age 18 and 9.7% of those age 65 or over.

Presidential visit

President Barack Obama visited Monroe City on April 28, 2010. His motorcade was enroute from Quincy, Illinois to a tour of a biofuels plant near Macon, Missouri. An impromptu stop at Peggy Sue's Cafe for lunch was followed by several minutes of informal question & answers with the president, diners, and restaurant staff. Departing the restaurant, Mr. Obama crossed the street to a nearby insurance agency for several more minutes of discussion with the insurance office staff on a multitude of issues, including recently-passed healthcare reform legislation.
