Baroy, Lanao del Norte

Baroy is a 4th class municipality in the province of Lanao del Norte, Philippines. According to the 2007 census, it has a population of 21,430 people.

History

As early as 1918, Baroy was originally called Baloy, a plant commonly found in the community that is used for mat weaving. Later on, the said plant became extinct and the pioneering inhabitants of the locality decided to change the name to Baroy.

The municipality of Baroy was formerly a mere barrio of the municipal district of Kolambugan, Lanao del Norte. It became a regular municipality on June 10, 1949 by Virtue of Executive.No. 222 during the term of the late Pres. Elpidio L. Quirino.

Geography

Baroy is located about 69.1 kilometers in the Southwest of Iligan City. Geographically, Baroy is located on the North by Panguil Bay and on the East by the Municipality of Tubod, on the South by the Municipality of Salvador, on the West by the Municipality of Lala.

Considering the latest population census of 2007 which is 21,430 and based on the tax mapping in cooperation with the LDAP-RPTA the updated area of the municipality is 8,009.2935 hectares or 80.09 sq. km., the municipal gross population density is 2.67 persons per hectares or 267 per sq. km. utilizing its population of 17,661 and the area of 7,740.6092 hectares. On the other hand, its urban density is 21.9 persons per hectares or 219 per sq. km. since its population is 5,583 with an area of 268.6843 hectares.

Presently, Baroy has a total area of approximately 8,009.2935 hectares. The agricultural land is approximately 5,348.3994 hectares. Coco lands accounted to about 4,921.6994 hectares and the remaining 426.70 hectares are devoted to rice production. O said rice lands, 251.2 hectares are irrigated while 175.50 hectares are rainfed area.

Baroy is politically subdivided into 23 barangays.
