Roman Catholic Diocese of Monterey-Fresno

Roman Catholic Diocese of Monterey-Fresno

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Monterey-Fresno was formerly a particular church of the Roman Catholic Church in California, United States. The diocese was composed of the present dioceses of Monterey and Fresno (q.v.) The diocese was erected in 1922—split off from the former Diocese of Monterey-Los Angeles, and existed until 1967 when it again was split into two. The see was located in Fresno.

Upon erection of the diocese, it was administered by the Bishop of Los Angeles-San Diego. In 1924, Irish-born Most Rev. John Bernard MacGinley was transferred from the Philippines to become the first bishop of Monterey-Fresno. He was succeeded by Bishops Scher and Willinger. On October 6, 1967, the diocese was split between Monterey and Fresno, and Most Rev. Aloysius Joseph Willinger retired as the third and last bishop of the diocese.
